In a big move for users who want to reduce screen time, YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows you to completely turn off Shorts on the mobile app. This update is currently rolling out globally and is expected to reach more users soon.
This new feature gives users more control over how they use the app, especially for those who feel they spend too much time watching short videos.
YouTube Shorts Can Now Be Turned Off
Earlier, YouTube allowed users to set a time limit for watching Shorts. The minimum limit was 15 minutes, and the maximum was up to two hours. Once the time limit was reached, users would see a reminder asking them to stop scrolling.
But now, YouTube has taken it a step further.
With the latest update, users can set the Shorts timer to 0 minutes. This means the Shorts feed will be disabled completely from the homepage. As soon as you set the limit to zero, the app will stop showing Shorts in your main feed.
Instead, you will see a message saying that you have reached your Shorts feed limit.
How This Feature Works
The new option has been added under the Time Management settings in the YouTube app. Once enabled, the Shorts feed will be hidden, helping users avoid endless scrolling.
Here is how you can use this feature:
- Open YouTube app
- Go to Settings
- Tap on Time Management
- Select Daily Limits
- Enable Shorts Feed Limit
- Set the timer to 0 minutes
Once done, Shorts will no longer appear in your homepage feed.
Short-form videos like YouTube Shorts have become very popular, but they are also known for being addictive. Many users end up spending hours scrolling without realizing it.
With this update, Google is focusing on digital wellbeing. The company is giving users better tools to control their screen time and create a healthier viewing experience.
This feature is especially useful for:
- Students who want to avoid distractions
- Working professionals trying to stay focused
- Parents who want to limit content for children
Shorts May Still Appear in Some Sections
Even after disabling Shorts from the homepage, users should note that Shorts videos may still appear in other parts of the app. For example:
- Subscriptions feed
- Search results
- Channel pages
However, the main infinite scrolling experience on the home screen will be removed.
Expansion from Parental Controls
Interestingly, this feature was first introduced as part of parental controls. It allowed parents to restrict or block Shorts for children and teenagers.
Now, YouTube has expanded this feature to all users, including adult accounts. This shows that the company is taking user feedback seriously and working on improving user experience.
Rollout Status
The feature is currently being rolled out gradually. This means not all users will see it immediately. Some devices and accounts already have access, while others may receive it in the coming weeks.
