The ATM Withdrawals rules are set to change significantly from April 1, 2026, bringing important updates for bank customers across India. Leading banks like HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Bandhan Bank have revised their ATM transaction policies, which will directly impact how often you can withdraw cash without extra charges.
These changes mainly focus on reducing excessive ATM usage and encouraging digital payments. Customers must now plan their withdrawals carefully to avoid paying additional fees.
What Is Changing in ATM Withdrawals from April 1
Starting April 1, 2026, banks will revise the free transaction limits, cash withdrawal caps, and charges for extra usage. Once customers exceed their monthly free transaction limit, they may have to pay up to ₹23 per transaction plus applicable taxes.
These updates apply to both financial transactions like cash withdrawals and non financial services such as balance enquiries in certain cases.
HDFC Bank ATM Withdrawal Changes
HDFC Bank has introduced a major update related to UPI based ATM withdrawals. Cardless cash withdrawals using UPI will now be counted within the free transaction limit.
- Customers will get 5 free transactions at HDFC Bank ATMs every month
- At other bank ATMs, 3 free transactions are allowed in metro cities and 5 in non metro cities
- After crossing the limit, ₹23 per transaction will be charged
Earlier, UPI withdrawals were treated separately, but now they are included in the same monthly limit. This change will affect users who frequently use cardless cash withdrawal facilities.
Punjab National Bank Reduces Withdrawal Limits
Punjab National Bank has revised its daily withdrawal limits for several debit cards.
- Platinum, Gold, and Business debit cards now allow up to ₹50,000 per day instead of ₹1 lakh
- Select and Signature cards now have a limit of ₹75,000 instead of ₹1.5 lakh
This means customers will need to make multiple withdrawals or shift to digital payments for larger transactions.
Bandhan Bank Updates Free Transaction Policy
Bandhan Bank has also changed its ATM usage rules.
- 5 free financial transactions per month at Bandhan Bank ATMs
- Unlimited non financial transactions at own ATMs
- At other bank ATMs, 3 free transactions in metro cities and 5 in non metro cities
Once the limit is exceeded, charges will be applied as per bank guidelines.
Why These ATM Withdrawal Changes Matter
These updates are introduced in line with guidelines from the Reserve Bank of India. The goal is to reduce dependency on cash and promote digital transactions such as UPI, mobile banking, and net banking.
Frequent ATM users will be the most affected. If you exceed the free transaction limit, your monthly banking expenses may increase.
Tips to Avoid Extra ATM Charges
- Use UPI and digital payments for daily transactions
- Plan cash withdrawals in advance
- Avoid multiple small withdrawals
- Check your bank’s monthly free transaction limit regularly
- Prefer your own bank’s ATM to reduce charges
