The India Meteorological Department has released its latest weekly weather update for April, and the forecast brings a mix of intense heatwave conditions along with rainfall and thunderstorms across different parts of the country. According to inputs sourced, the coming days will see extreme weather patterns, making it important for people to stay alert.
Heatwave to Grip Central and Eastern India
As summer strengthens its hold, several regions are expected to face severe heatwave conditions. The IMD has warned that states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand will continue to experience high temperatures until April 23.
Regions including Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Central Maharashtra are also likely to remain under the impact of rising temperatures. In fact, temperatures across Central India and nearby areas such as eastern Rajasthan and southern Uttar Pradesh may remain 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal during the last week of April.
Coastal regions in states like West Bengal and Gujarat, along with parts of South India, are expected to witness hot and humid weather, which can cause discomfort and health issues if precautions are not taken.
Rain and Thunderstorm to Bring Partial Relief
Despite the intense heat, some regions are expected to receive rainfall and thunderstorms, which may offer temporary relief. As per the IMD update, northeastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Nagaland are likely to experience rain and lightning between April 17 and April 20.
In northern regions, weather activity is expected in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from April 17 to 19. After that, states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and cities like Delhi may see light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
Eastern and Eastern Plains to Witness Strong Winds
Sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to experience light rainfall along with thunderstorms and strong winds ranging between 30 to 50 km per hour from April 17 to April 19. Similar weather conditions are expected in Bihar on April 18 and in Odisha between April 17 and April 21.
There is also a possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in parts of West Bengal and Sikkim on April 18, which may impact daily life and travel.
Central and Southern India Weather Update
Central India will also see changing weather patterns. Light rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected in West Madhya Pradesh on April 19 and 20. Lightning strikes are also likely in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh around April 20.
In South India, regions like Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Interior Karnataka, Telangana, and Rayalaseema may experience light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning between April 17 and April 20.
Additionally, lightning activity is expected to remain active in Coastal Karnataka and nearby regions during this period.
Looking at the bigger picture, India recorded 46 percent below normal rainfall in the past week. However, from March 1 to April 15, the overall rainfall across the country stands at 14 percent above normal. This shows that while short-term variations exist, the seasonal rainfall trend remains positive.
