Heatwave Warning in India: Delhi Braces for 41°C as 8 States Face Rising Temperatures

India is witnessing an early and intense onset of summer, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a heatwave warning for multiple states across the country. As temperatures continue to rise sharply, several regions are already experiencing heatwave-like conditions, even before the peak summer months of May and June.

According to reports, the national capital Delhi is expected to record temperatures as high as 41°C by April 17, signaling a significant spike in heat levels. The current weather trend suggests that this year’s summer may be more severe than usual.

Heatwave Warning Issued in 8+ States

The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for several states between April 14 and April 16. These include:

  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Odisha
  • Bihar
  • Jharkhand
  • Gujarat
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Maharashtra (including Marathwada)
  • Saurashtra and Kutch regions

In these areas, residents are likely to face extreme heat conditions, accompanied by dry winds and rising humidity in coastal regions. The situation is particularly concerning as such conditions are appearing earlier than expected in the season.

Rising Temperatures Across Regions

Weather data indicates a steady increase in temperatures across various parts of the country:

  • Northwest India may witness a temperature rise of 4 to 6°C by April 18
  • Central India, including Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh, could see a rise of 3 to 5°C
  • Gujarat and Maharashtra are expected to record a gradual increase of 2 to 3°C

In fact, the highest temperature recorded in the country recently was a scorching 43.1°C in Akola, Maharashtra, highlighting the severity of the current heatwave.

Cities across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Rajasthan are already reporting temperatures close to 40°C, creating discomfort for residents and increasing health risks.

Hot and Humid Conditions to Persist

Apart from dry heat, several regions are also likely to face hot and humid weather conditions, especially:

  • Odisha
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh
  • Gujarat
  • West Bengal
  • Parts of South India

This combination of heat and humidity can significantly increase the “feels like” temperature, making outdoor conditions even more uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.

Rainfall Expected in Northeast India

While most parts of India are battling rising temperatures, the northeastern region may get some relief. The India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall from April 14 to April 17 in states such as:

  • Assam
  • Meghalaya
  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Nagaland
  • Manipur
  • Mizoram
  • Tripura

These showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds (30–50 km/h). In some areas, heavy rainfall is also expected, particularly in Assam and Meghalaya.

Health Advisory During Heatwave

With temperatures soaring across the country, health experts advise citizens to take necessary precautions:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours
  • Wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes
  • Use sunscreen and cover your head when outdoors
  • Pay special attention to children, elderly individuals, and those with existing health conditions

Heatwaves can lead to serious conditions such as heatstroke and dehydration, making awareness and preparedness crucial.
